The Shanghai Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Medical Center at Fudan University (SOGH), also known as the Shanghai Red House Maternity and Infant Hospital, was established in 1884 by an American missionary group. The founding of this hospital would not have been possible without Ms. Margaret Williamson’s generous $5000 grant. Initially, it was only a two-room clinic. However, it was the first maternity and infant hospital in Shanghai. In honor of the contribution from Ms. Margaret Williamson, it was named the Margaret Williamson Hospital. The hospital was then expended by another American, Dr. Al Ralph, and renamed the Red House Maternity and Infant Hospital. In 1952, it became the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital affiliated with the Shanghai First Medical College. In 1992, it was approved as the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of the Red Cross of Shanghai, and was entitled “Baby Friendly Hospital” by the Ministry of Public Health and WHO United Nation Children’s Foundation. The hospital was awarded the title of III A specialty hospital in 1995.

This hospital is equipped with state-of –the-art equipments that represent major breakthroughs in science and technology such as the BRCA1 gene amplification system to detect signals of gene expression and thin-layer cell detection system for early diagnosis and improved treatment of many diseases. Other equipment, like the GE700, GE730 3D color Doppler with laparoscopic ultrasound probe, DSA-100 mA Siemens X-ray, sets of gynecological endoscopes, and more make up 195 pieces of equipment worth more than $10,000 in the hospital.

The Red House Hospital is the headquarters for training new specialists around the country. Every year, they graduate about 300 residents and 60 fellows, hold series of classes to spread out their knowledge and technique, and edit text and reference books. They have research programs assigned by the Ministry of Health and in partnership with American National Institute of Health and other American institutes. They have discovered many new developments on their research projects and won numerous awards. To this day, the SOBH is the leading hospital not only in medical care, but also in teaching and scientific research.
